Spotlight on Cordyceps: The Immune Boosting, Cancer Fighting Natural Supplement
This promising supplement could have anti-aging benefits too. Find out more about what it is and how to take it.
Cordyceps is a type of parasitic fungus that grows on insect larvae. Now, that obviously doesn’t sound too appetizing. And for those of you who watched The Last of Us, I don’t blame you if you’re thinking long and hard about whether it makes sense to go anywhere near it.
But, in reality, this nightmare-inducing mushroom has some great health benefits. It’s considered an adaptogen, which is a substance believed to help your body handle stress more effectively. Plus, it may help fight cancer and boost your immunity, among other health benefits.
The tale of Cordyceps takes us back centuries to ancient China. For over 2000 years, this fungus has been a staple in traditional Chinese medicine. It was used to treat various medical conditions and even today, it continues to hold a significant place in Chinese healthcare.
So let’s explore some of the benefits of Cordyceps and whether it makes sense to take this supplement.
How Cordyceps can boost your immunity
Various studies have found that Cordyceps has a significant impact on the immune system. For instance, a study involving mice found that Cordyceps may boost the immune response by growing specific immune cells which play a key role in identifying and eliminating harmful substances in the body.
Some research suggests that Cordyceps may have an antiviral effect on several virus strains, adding another layer to its immune-boosting properties. Studies on Cordymin, a Cordyceps compound, are particularly promising. Cordymin managed to suppress the reverse transcriptase of HIV. In simple terms, reverse transcriptase is a process that HIV uses to reproduce itself inside the human body. So, cordymin was able to interfere with this process and is potentially beneficial for those suffering with the virus.
Also, multiple studies have found that cordymin can act as both an anti-inflammatory and an antinociceptive agent. In simpler language, this means it could potentially help reduce inflammation and block the detection of painful stimuli too.
Cordyceps and its cancer fighting properties
Several studies show a link between Cordyceps militaris, a particular species of the fungus, and cancer prevention and treatment. Studies have found that Cordyceps can suppress inflammation and prevent the proliferation of human cancer cells. And other research indicates that Cordyceps can inhibit the growth of various cancer cells.
There’s also evidence that Cordyceps might help with the recovery from the side effects of cancer treatments. A study found that a health supplement of Cordyceps sinensis enhanced recovery from Taxol-induced leukopenia, a common side effect of chemotherapy where white blood cell count decreases, leading to increased risk of infection.
While more research is needed, Cordyceps seems to be a promising ally in the fight against cancer.
Other benefits of Cordyceps
Cordyceps antioxidants may have anti-aging properties. Antioxidants are substances that protect the cells in your body from damage caused by free radicals. In the context of aging, free radicals can cause oxidative stress, which damages cells and contributes to the aging process.
Studies show that Cordyceps might neutralize free radicals. This can help prevent their damage and potentially slow down the aging process. So, not only can this fungus fight off intruders like viruses and cancer cells, but it might also keep you looking youthful and radiant.
But the benefits don’t stop there. In fact, this power-packed fungus might also help boost your exercise performance. A study found that a polysaccharide from Cordyceps militaris helped reduce physical fatigue induced by forced swimming. And another study found that taking reishi in combination with Cordyceps helped prevent stress-related as a result of overtraining in male athletes.
From anti-aging properties to boosting exercise performance, Cordyceps can be potentially beneficial to everyone.
Taking Cordyceps: Understanding Cordyceps supplements
Before taking supplements like Cordyceps, you should consult with your doctor. Cordyceps can interact with certain medications and, as with any supplement, it’s not right for everyone. However, if you’re looking to boost your immune system or achieve other health goals, Cordyceps may be able to help.
Cordyceps supplements come in various forms, including capsules, powders, and liquid extracts. Harvesting Cordyceps is really expensive, so most supplements nowadays are grown in labs.
There isn’t an established dosage for Cordyceps, but a physician well versed in supplements use and doses will be able to guide you. It takes a few weeks to feel the effects of adaptogens on the body, so it’s worth remembering the results won’t be instantaneous.
